Championship Boys: A SCHER THING!
Glenn Scher of Calabasas came away with the "W" Tuesday after defeating the defending champion, Justin Edwards of Westlake Village on the first hole of a sudden death playoff. The day started with rookie, JJ Holen of Castaic on top of the leaderboard by one-stroke over the veteran Scher and by two-strokes over Edwards. At the turn, Scher took the lead by two-strokes over Edwards with eight straight pars and a birdie to complete a steady first nine. Both players made mistakes on the final nine and with four holes left to play, Scher had a one-stroke lead. A par by Edwards on #17 drew him to even with one hole to play. Both players finished with bogies and tied at 148, Edwards shooting 72 (+1) and Scher shooting 74 (+3). Coming up short was Jordan Cuthbert of Camarillo, firing a 69 (-2) which was the low round of the championship and finishing only one stroke back at 149. Starting the day on fire with four birdies in the first seven holes was Chris Doyle of Westlake Village, finishing with a solid 70 (-1) and finishing in 4th at 150. Tied for fifth was Daniel Slovis, of Woodland Hills, shooting 72 (+1) and Cole Seeger of Westlake Village at 153. Scher, the 2007 VCJGA Player's Champion earned a valuable AJGA Exemption for the victory.
Championship Girls: PRIMA TIME!
Prima Thammaraks of Gardena took the first round lead on Monday with a solid 74 (+2) and never looked back. In the final round she shot a three birdie, one bogie 69 (-2) and won by 11 shots! Last week at the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships she finished tied for 15th. In second was Suchaya Tankamolprasert, also of Gardena played consistenly with a couple of 77's, finishing at 154. Sauchaya also played in the Junior World (age 13-14 division) and finished tied for ninth. Finishing in third was Nikki Prichard of Newhall shooting an 80 (+7) and finishing at 168. In fourth was Sophia Chen of Newbury Park and in fifth was Katherine Liu of Westlake Village.
Boys 12-14: DROGOSCH HANDLES THE HEAT!
With several players applying pressure, Brock Drogosch of Westlake Village kept cool under pressure and took home the victory by three strokes. His 77, 73 for a total of 150 was closer than it looks. Starting the day tied for the lead was Drogosch and Walker Huddy of Studio City. After nine holes, Huddy took a one stroke lead to the back nine. A two stroke swing on the 10th put Drogosch back on top at +6 with Huddy and Jonathan Sanders of Chatsworth at +7. Sanders applied pressure with three birdies on the front nine. Alex Angard of Encino turned at +8 and after a slow start, Joseph Ahn of Camarillo turned at +10. Huddy had difficulties on the back nine along with Angard. Although Ahn kept close by making 14 straight pars, his slow start didn't get him any closer to the lead. Sanders made things pretty interesting by making birdies on 10 and 13 which tied him for the lead momentarily, but Drogosch kept making pars pulled away for good. Sanders shot the low round of the tournament with a solid even par round of 71 and tied for second with Ahn who shot a 74 (+3). In fourth was another solid finish for Angard. Huddy finished in fifth, Bryce Haynes of Camarillo finished in sixth, Stephan Moffatt of Simi Valley seventh, Drew Miller of Thousand Oaks finished eighth and tied for 9th was Jake Andl of Westlake Village and Ventura's Dirk Guthrie.
