Championship BoysGAJEFSKI FINISHES BIRDIE, BIRDIE!

After the first round yesterday, many players were still in the mix. The leader Bobby Holden of Simi Valley shot an even par 70, followed by Nick Gajefski of Ventura with a 71; Shane Blanchard of Simi Valley 73; Brett Silvernail of Ventura and Tyler Schwanz of Oak Park with 74’s; Mo Bardovi, Brandon Molnar each of Calabasas and Jeremy Sanders of Chatsworth with 75’s. The tournament was still up for grabs as players made the turn. Gajefski caught Holden through 27 holes at +1, Schwanz was +2, and Blanchard and Bardovi were +4. It became a two-man race after Holden birdied #15 and took the lead. But Gajefski came storming back with late birdies on 17 and 18 to pull off the one stroke victory. His two day total of 143 (+1) earned him is second victory of the season. Holden came up one stroke short at 144 (+2); and Schwanz eagled the par 5 18th to finish tied for third with Blanchard at 147 (+5). Other top finishers included: Mo Bardovi, Calabasas 148 (+6) and Brett Silvernail 149 (+7). Benjamin Shur of Ventura fired a final round 72 and finished tied for 7th with Thomas Lim of Moorpark and rookie Brock Drogosch of Westlake at 151 (+9).

Championship Girls:  CORNELISON WINS IT!

Liz Cornelison of Westlake Village came from behind to earn the victory over Katherine Liu of Westlake Village and Shannon Holden of Simi Valley. Holden had the lead as players made the turn, but Cornelison and Liu played superb on the back nine both shooting even par 36’s!  Cornelison took a two stroke lead to #18 after Liu birdied #17.  It had been a long tough road, but Liz showed everyone that if it is worth having, it is worth working for.  Other top finishers included: Sophia Chen of Newbury Park and Remy Molyneux of Westlake Village tied for fourth and Charlotte Gibson of Westlake Village and Taylor Gould tied for sixth.

Boys 12-14:  HAYNES BIRDIES FINAL HOLE!

Bryce Haynes of Camarillo took a two stroke lead into the final round over Johnny Ruiz of Oxnard and a three shot lead over Jonathan Sanders of Chatsworth. Over the final nine it became a two man race to the finish as Haynes and Ruiz were tied at the turn. Haynes birdied the twelfth hole to take a one stroke lead and birdied again at fifteen. The difficult sixteenth changed all that after Ruiz made par. Haynes showed a lot of perseverance and patience as his lead was gone and they headed to the eighteenth hole all square. Both players had short pitch shots to the par 5. Ruiz missed his birdie attempt by inches and Haynes had about fifteen feet left for the birdie and the win. He rolled it into the center and earned the victory. All the players shook hands and walked off the green together. It was Haynes day. Multiple winner Jonathan Sanders pared his last eleven holes and finished third. Dirk Guthrie of Ventura and Drew Miller of Westlake Village tied for fourth and Joseph Moffatt finished in sixth.
