VCJGA - TaylorMade - Ventura County Championship FINAL RESULTS/RECAP Wood Ranch Golf Club, Simi Valley, CA - Par 36+36=72 Clear skies, temperatures in the mid 90's and one club winds. Course was in great condition with firm, fast greens. Championship Boys: RUIZ WINS Johhny Ruiz of Camarillo (2012) began the final round two strokes behind first round leader and high school teamate Joseph Ahn of Camarillo (2012). Johnny finished with a two-day total of 152, good enough to earn the victory and an AJGA tournament exemption. Tied for second were Brandon Shaw of Westlake Village (2012) and Kyle Demshki of Calabasas (2010) at a score of 154. Shaw shot the low round of the tournament, a 73 that included a triple bogey. Tied for fourth were Taylor Stein of Newbury Park (2011) and Ryan Hendler of Agoura Hills (2010). In sixth was Michael Ondrejko of Thousand Oaks (2012) and in seventh, Ricky Ulrich of Hidden Hills (2011). Rounding out the top-10 were Nick Gajefski of Ventura (2010); Jacob Gralitzer of Agoura (2010) and Brett Silvernail of Ventura (2010). Rules Note: Two players were disqualified under Rule 22-1. Although most Rules Officials would agree that 22-1 is not their favorite rule, it is very important that everyone understands and abides by it. It is Important to note that the two players were not cheating, nor did they intentionally do anything wrong; however, USGA Decision 22/6 outlined the situation exactly and the players involved were disqualified after conferring with the USGA. Our website will offer more information to educate players, but the bottom line is that any player that is in close proximity to the hole should mark their ball or hole out anytime a ball could assist another player to avoid breach of this rule. ALSO, the VCJGA is very proud of the honorable character and professionalism each of these players displayed during this difficult ruling. Championship Girls: MANTHENA Divya Manthena of Simi Valley (2015) has had several solid finishes this season, but never really thought she could win on such a long golf course. She proved herself wrong and took home the top prize with a two-day total of 176. In second was Taylor Gould, also from Simi Valley (2010). Boys 12-15: ANGARD OUTLASTS MOFFATT Alex Angard of Encino (2013) shot a tournament low 71 (-1) in the first round and began the day with a three stroke lead over Stephan Moffatt of Simi Valley (2013). Stephan took the lead late in the round; then Alex birdied his 16th and 17th hole and Stephan had a one stroke lead. Alex made Par and Stephan bogied and they were tied at 149. They played a four-hole, stroke play playoff and were still tied, each scoring 20. Sudden Death began on the fifth and Alex won the championship to take home the top spot. Stephan made a great comeback and played tough all day and nearly stole the championship. Brandon Kelly of Oak Park (2013) finished in third place, shooting a final round 77. Fourth place went to Sean Crocker of Westlake Village (2014). Tied for fifth place were Brett Hagy of Wetlake Village (2013) and VCJGA rookie, Mitch Martin of Arroyo Grande (2013). In seventh place was Peter Griffith of Westlake Village (2015); in eighth place was Anthony Wagner of Ventura (2013); finishing in ninth place was Matthew Van Zandt of Thousand Oaks (2014); and rounding out the top-10 was Spencer Soosman of Westlake Village (2016).
