VCJGA - THE VENTURA OPEN

FINAL RESULTS

Olivas Links Golf Course, Ventura, CA - Boys: Par 36-36-72

The temperatures in the low 60's and some ocean breezes kept things interesting on Olivas Links.  Many thanks to PGA Professional Carl Van Vallier and GCSAA Superintendent Matt Mulvany and their staff for their kind hospitality.

Championship Boys:  SILVERNAIL GOES LOW

Brett Silvernail (2010) has won two of the last three tournaments, moving him into third place in the Player of the Year standings.  The Buena High senior started the day one-stroke back, but took command early, making birdies on holes 2, 3, 4, and 6 and finishing with a tournament low 68.  Finishing only two strokes back was Rory Doll (2010) of Arroyo Grande.  He birdied two of the first four holes and fired a two-under 70 for his best VCJGA finish to date.  First round leader, Jeremy Sanders (2010) had a difficult time getting to the course and almost missed his starting time after a flat tire.  He made it just in time to play, but just couldn't get anything going.  His final round 74 was highlighted by an eagle three on the final hole.

In fourth place was Matt Weitz (2011) of Thousand Oaks shooting a solid two birdie, two bogie round of 72.  Tied for 5th at 151 were Sean Searls (2012) of Santa Barbara and Andrew Moore (2011) of Saugus.  Tied for 7th at 152 were Jordan Thomas (2010) and Dirk Guthrie (2012), both of Ventura.

Championship Girls:  SANCHEZ MAKES THE DRIVE

Lauren Sanches (2012) of Santa Clara made the five hour drive on Friday and played a practice round.  It proved to be enough course preparation as put together two solid rounds of 76-73 for a 149 total and the victory.  Lauren played steady making five birdies and 21 pars over 36-holes.  Finishing second for the fifth time this season was Player of the Year points leader, Remy Molyneux (2010) of Westlake Village.  She shot 78-75 and made 26 pars over the two 2014) days but could only manage one birdie.  In third was Tiffany Yau (2014) of Porter Ranch shooting a pair of steady 78's to finish at 156.  In fourth place was Ventura's Emily Wisma (2010) who took her SAT test on Saturday morning before her starting time.

Boys 12-15:   SOOSMAN FINISHES ON TOP

Spencer Soosman (2016) of Westlake Village played some Mini-Tour events in the winter, then played  baseball in the spring; and returned to golf this the summer.  He is playing up as an eleven year old in the Boys 12-15 division, but if you never met him, you wouldn't know that based on his golf scores.  His 72-70 for a two under total of 142 was highlighted by an eagle, eight birdies and 20 pars against a very accomplished field.  Tied for second were Alex Angard (2013) of Encino and Stephan Moffatt (2013) of Simi Valley.  Alex had a great final round that included five birdies and only one bogie.  His four under 68 was the low round of the tournament.  Stephan shot two consistent rounds of 71-72 making five birdies and 27 pars.

In 4th place was Gregory Robarge II (2013) of Ventura finishing with a 151.  Two time champion, Sean Crocker (2014) of Westlake Village finished at 153.  Peter Griffith of Westlake Village finished in 6th place shooting his season low round of 155.  Tied for 7th at 156 were Steven Moentmann (2015) of Stevenson Ranch and Kris Hopkins (2013) of Westlake Village.  Tied for 9th were Michael Finney (2014) of La Canada and Victor Ponte (2014) of Camarillo at 157.

NOTEAnthony Wagner was disqualified on Sunday morning after it was discovered that he inadvertently signed his scorecard with a four on the 18th hole instead of a five (Rule 6-6d - page 31).  Although this was a mistake on his part, it shows how important the scoring procedure is at the conclusion of a round.  He knew what he shot, but he did not take enough care in checking the hole-by-hole scores.  Under the rules, you are signing for what score you made on each hole, not the total score.  It is very important that each of you take the time to focus on the accuracy of the 18 scores rather than the totals.  The scoring area should be thought of as the 19th hole by all players.  If you make an error in the scoring area, it can cost you the tournament.  Anthony accepted this ruling with dignity and wanted all of you to learn from his mistake.

A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS for your assistance in making this tournament a great event.  Check-In - Rena & Jessica Cienfuegos; Scoring Administration - Nancy Wipf; Starter - Tom Conaughton; Rules Official - Michael Shiney; Pace of Play - Rico Tubbs and Rick Nicholson; Water Stations - John Davis; Scoring Table - Michael Moffatt; Scoreboard - Cyndi Nicholson - THANK YOU!  You all did a wonderful job.  ALSO, Thanks to Michael Moffatt for providing Smores at the campfire!
